November 11, 19….a while ago

Today’s my birthday — and what a lovely one it’s been so far. Baby Daisy rolled over for the first time. Isn’t that a fun present?

Sorry I haven’t had a chance to blog since my return from South Dakota. Busy, busy. Line edits on the first book in the Sentinel Pass series — and since I FOUND Sentinel Pass (well, the imaginary one in my head, at least) I had to jump right into it before the images disappear. I’m getting older, what can I say?

Here are a couple of shots from my trip. More to follow, if anyone is interested. Like my hero, Cooper, I was surprised by how beautiful, peaceful and inviting the Black Hills are. And I used to live there!

Everyone has to visit the presidents when they go the Black Hills. Gutzum Borgland, the visionary behind this monument, would only agree to do it if it would remain free to the public. It still is, but it costs to park. Hmmm… Still, it truly is impressive. And wooly white mountain goats keep the lawn trimmed. Way cool.

Rapid City has capitolized on the presidential theme by erecting brass statues of all the presidents on its streets. Here’s a shot of me and my cousin, Janie, who was the most wonderful hostess while I was there, with George Washington.

Notice how respectful she was, while I’ve got my arm through his like a date.

Her hubby, Stan, took me hiking to the top of Harney Peak. Four hours, round-trip.

You’ll read about this in my book. What a view!!! At 7, 424′, it’s the tallest place between the Rockies and Switzerland — and you can see 4 states. Really. Although I suggest you pick a day when it’s not 22-degrees wind chill factor. Brrrr…. Here’s a shot of me in the look-out tower. What an amazing structure! Do I look cold? I was cold.

All for now. Gotta dash. My sis is taking me to a play, then I’m having dinner with my “home-girls” . Life is good.

  1. Happy Birthday and many more too!

Best present is seeing those grandchildren whatever they do

  2. Hey Deb…Happy 29th Birthday!!!!!
I love the Black Hills too. Been there several times, and the most impressive thing I’ve seen was “Crazy Horse”. They say it will never be finished in our life time. And to compare the size of Mt. Rushmore to Crazy Horse is just unbelievable. One must see Mt. Rushmore 1st, before going to see Crazy Horse. They are both unbelievable. I’m glad you had a great trip and are safely back home. I just finished reading, “Betting on Santa”. Awesome job. Loved the story. It takes a bit to wake up these gamblers to see what they really have, and I really like these mini series as the story continues on in the next book. Now I’m anxiously waiting for your next one to come. Patti

  6. Thanks, my friends!!! Appreciate the good wishes. I had a lovely day with my sister, and later with my friends and family. My daughter made a wonderful meal for us. Simple things are often the most precious.

Thanks to all who read and enjoyed Betting On Santa. I’m going to start a new contest this month, and will try to post a photo of the prize in the next day or two.

i just finished my line edits on the next book — go, go, go. And helped process cactus for cactus jelly. A very full day, indeed.

    Off to sleep….

  7. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! Sorry I missed it, but better late than never. ;-)

I love the pictures! Thanks for sharing. Looks like you had an amazing time.

I visited the presidents on a family trip back when I was 16… that was many years ago. I’ve been wanting to take my own family. Now that I’ve seen your pics, I want to even more.

  8. Thanks, Tammy. Good to see you. Maybe I can get the SD tourism board to promote my books  since I’m encouraging people to visit the state.

  9. I’ve been to SD on vacation and just love it (except the driving around curves in the hills). I especially enjoyed seeing Mt. Rushmore. Unfortunately it was long enough ago that there was very little of Crazy Horse. I would very much like to go back and stay a little longer and see a little more.

  10. Oh shoot! Sorry I missed your birthday! I’ve missed you online and thought I’d check to see how things were going…you sound busy!! ;-)

I’ve finished both books and loved them!! I’m ready for more… Can’t wait til next one hits the shelf.
